Hello again,

I thought Id mention a couple of the artists that stuck out at for me at the exhibition.

I first came across Annelie's work in the latest Monki  magazine I got in the post.  I was then surprised and super excited to see her work up close at the Pick Me Up exhibition.  Her work has to be seen the flesh to truly appreciate the incredible detail. If i wasn't so broke I would have brought a piece (or a few) right then and there! You can find out more about Annelie and her work on her lovely blog.

For my final degree project I decided to go wild and do a collage depicting the story of Cinderella. I thought searching and cutting out images to use would be a piece of cake.....I was so very wrong.  As soon as i saw Seiko's work my finger started to tremble with the memory of the scalpel.  You cant really see it in the images about but each piece is painstakingly cut out and assembled.  The results are astonishing and once you get over the initial reaction of, "that must have taken ages to do" you begin to appreciate the composition and delicate beauty of each piece. You can find out more about Seiko and her amazing work on her blog.

The Embankment galleries at Somerset House are huge and it was slightly dizzying trying to look at everything.  I was hoping to go back to the exhibition to catch the rest of what I didn't get time to see before it closed but didn't make it due to the protests..........Ill leave that story for another time!

PS.........I also need mention a really nice magazine called Its Nice That. I bought the first and second issue and Ive only had a chance to read a couple of pages but can see my self falling in love! If you are interest in contemporary arts and graphic design you'll love it too! Ill attempt to have a post dedicated to each edition.

Pick Me Up @ Somerset House

Hello!

A couple of weekends ago you would have found me and a friend reuniting over some contemporary graphic art at Somerset House!

Pick Me Up is in its second year celebrating and showcasing contemporary graphic art.

Here is what Somerset House had to say:

"The best, most innovative and avant-garde graphic artists, collectives and galleries from the UK and across the world are exhibiting and offering an exuberant mix of artworks for sale."

I am a photographer by degree but have much more interest in illustration.  This gathering of talented artists in the sublime surroundings of Somerset House was an explosion of inspiration.

Anyway acting like a kid in a candy store we observed artists making stuff and was given the opportunity to participate in drawing/cutting and pasting (cutting and pasting is the BEST!) workshops!

If this runs again next year I highly recommend you go! It was only a fiver (adv price) and made for an interesting and amazing day out!

I'm currently working on some drawings and hope to share them in the Garden soon :D.

Hello

Hello,

Welcome to We Live in the Garden.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this  phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it's normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
